Will ask the Centre to raise the maximum landholding limit of two hectares

MUMBAI: UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Monday hinted that the UPA government will broaden the scope of the Rs60,000-crore farm loan waiver by raising the maximum landholding limit of two hectares, allowing more debt-ridden farmers to avail of the benefit.

“The country cannot be happy if the farmer, who should be called not only the annadata but also the jeevandata of the country, is sad,” said the Congress chief while addressing a farmers’ rally at Budhgaon in western Maharashtra’s Sangli district.

The Maharashtra government has already sent a proposal to the Centre, asking for the waiver to be extended to non-irrigated land over two hectares.

Certificate to CM: Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh surely must be on cloud nine after Congress president Sonia Gandhi gave him a certificate of good governance. At the “maha rally” held at Osmanabad (Marathwada), Gandhi said, “Only that government is worth which is concerned about the welfare of the poor and the oppressed classes.” She followed that with, “I can state that Maharashtra government under the leadership of Deshmukh has carried the Congress tradition of addressing the poor and weaker sections of the society.”

Gandhi’s appreciation for Deshmukh government is indeed a dampener for Deshmukh-baiters. One of them, revenue minister Narayan Rane skipped the Osmanabad rally. Instead, he preferred to attend Gandhi’s rally at Sangli organised by cooperation minister Patangrao Kadam, incidentally also a chief ministerial aspirant.

Industry minister Ashok Chavan used the occasion to mobilise his supporters and painting the entire town red with his self-portraits outnumbering those of Deshmukh. In the five assembly segments, Congress has only one seat, as against two each of the NCP and Shiv Sena.

Even the member of parliament here is from the Sena.
