LARKANA: The family of slain ex-Premier Benazir Bhutto and her party members offered special prayers at her ancestral village in Pakistan's southern Sindh province on Sunday as her husband Asif Ali Zardari urged people to honour her by continuing her struggle for achieving democracy.

Hundreds of PPP workers gathered at Bhutto's home in Naudero village for the 'soyem' prayers, which are offered on the third day of burial.

The men and women sat in separate enclosures and read from the Quran after special prayers were offered for Bhutto, who was assassinated after an election rally in Rawalpindi on Thursday. She was buried in the family graveyard on Friday.

Addressing the gathering, Zardari said his wife was a "fearless woman" who returned to Pakistan from exile despite knowing that there were threats to her life.

He said the people should commemorate her memory by continuing her struggle to usher in complete democracy in the country.

"Benazir Bhutto has died, but a Bhutto will emerge from every home," Zardari, dressed in black, told the gathering that included his 19-year-old son Bilawal.

Special prayers for Bhutto were also offered at her family mausoleum in Garhi Khuda Buksh, where she was buried next to her father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's grave. Hundreds of people from nearby areas gathered at the tomb to pray and pay their respects to Bhutto.

Readings from the Quran would continue at Bhutto's Naudero House throughout the day and the top leadership of the PPP will hold a meeting at 3 pm local time during which Bilawal will read out his mother's will that outlines the future of the party.

The meeting will also decide the PPP's stand for the forthcoming general election.
