NEW DELHI: The CBI has arrested a Delhi Police sub-inspector on charges of possessing narcotics and six 9mm pistols.

This is the first time that a police officer has been arrested for selling arms in the capital, senior police officials said. “The 9mm pistols are not available in the market. They are used by security forces, so it is a very serious issue,” a senior official said.

“Interrogating is on and we are trying to find out if more policemen are involved in the racket. The weapons don’t have the makers’ markings,” he added.

According to CBI officials,  the recovery of the weapons was by chance as the sleuths were trying to nail the accused for demanding bribe from complainants.

The sub-inspector had demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a complainant, the officer said.  “We had received a complaint against him. During the course of investigation, we found that he is involved in an arms racket,” he added.

According to senior officials, the sub-inspector had recently bought a flat worth Rs50 lakh and had spent about Rs 20 lakh for its renovation.
