ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has sealed its border with Afghanistan to check the infiltration of Taliban and Al Qaeda militants who have found shelter in the northern tribal areas of the country, a top military commander has said.

Inspector General of Frontier Corps Major General Saleem Nawaz said the Pakistan-Afghan border has been sealed completely and aerial monitoring of the area through state-of-the-art devices was continuing.

Major General Nawaz said steps have been taken to control infiltration of foreigners from Wazirstan to Zhob. He said 18 wings of the elite Frontier Corps have been deployed on the 1196-kilometre Kalkush-Rabat border with Afghanistan to check infiltration of insurgents.

He said Pakistan held talks with Afghanistan for the establishment of 10 check points on the border, with biometric system having been installed on the Chaman border to keep a tab on the movement of people.

At least 2680 infiltrators have been arrested in 2007, Major General Nawaz told a private TV Channel.

The senior commander said that the local tribesmen want peace in their area and were fully onboard with the government's plan to check infiltration and cooperating with the Frontier Corps deployed in the area.

Major General Nawaz was quoted as saying by the Online News that most of the 36 rebel camps in Balochistan's Dera Bugti and Kohlu have been eliminated after military operations.
