A Class X student fractured her left leg after falling off the third floor of a school building at Jogeshwari on Thursday afternoon.

The victim, Jyoti Rao (name changed), 16, is a student of the Arvind Gandhbir High School and a resident of Meghwadi area of Jogeshwari east. She has been admitted to Kulkarni hospital, and is reported to be in a stable condition, said Dr Himanshu Chitre, the attending physician.

According to the police, the incident took place at 1.45pm soon after Jyoti finished her preliminary exam in mathematics.

“She was coming towards the staircase of the third floor when she fell,” said E Sayeed, senior police inspector with the Jogeshwari police station.

Sayeed added that Jyoti had been receiving psychological counselling and treatment for the past five years. “Her mother was present during the incident,” he said. “She said that her daughter was prone to panic attacks. On Thursday, she had suffered two panic attacks.”

Rao’s father passed away a few years ago. She lives with her mother, who is a tailor, and a 13-year-old younger sister, who studies in Class VIII of the same school. “We have yet to register a case,” Sayeed said. “We are investigating whether this was an accident caused by a panic attack or a deliberate suicide attempt.”
