Commotion prevailed at Vashi court premises on Thursday when an undertrial prisoner hurled a chappal at a judicial magistrate.

Sources said that the accused Shivraj Yadav was lodged at Thane jail since the last year. He was arrested by the Turbhe police in connection with a theft.

Yadav was produced in the court of judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) DP Khandelwal at Vashi at 3 pm. During the hearing of the case, Yadav got agitated and suddenly removed a chappal and hurled it at the judge. However, he missed hitting Khandelwal by inches. Initially the police personnel present in the court were stunned, but they quickly recovered and pounced on Yadav.

The incident has come as a major blow to Navi Mumbai police. Despite the claims that adequate precautions were being taken, Yadav managed to take the chappal inside the court room. “Though there is no such rule that the accused should be taken barefoot in the court, there have been similar incidents in the past. Hence, some courts have issued directives that the accused should be asked to remove their footwear outside the court room,” said a senior police official. A case has been registered against Yadav under section 353 of the IPC at CBD police station.
