PNS declares first list of 5 candidates for PMC elections

Activist of PNS Vivek Velankar said the PNS has decided to give candidature to these five aspirants after conducting interviews.

Pune Nagarik Sanghatna (PNS) on Friday declared its first list of five candidates for the ensuing election of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Activist of PNS, an umbrella group of NGOs and civic activists in the city, Vivek Velankar said the PNS has decided to give candidature to these five aspirants after conducting interviews.

He said the PNS would continue the selection process till the end of this month. It has till date received more than 80 applications and is likely to put up 30 to 40 candidates.

PNS declared that advocate Sunil Jagtap (panel no 39 - Rasta Peth area), Bhairu Chowgule (panel no 74 - Dhankavdi area), Vinodkumar Oza (panel no 1— Dhanori, Lohegaon area), Preetam Indalkar (panel no 58 — Subhashnagar, PMPML commercial building area) and Raisa Shaikh (panel no 66 — Mukundnagar, Maharshinagar area) would be the candidates.

Jagtap is secretary of Pune Bar Association. He is activist of Rashtra Seva Dal since 1978. Vinodkumar Oza is an ex-serviceman who retired from Navy in 2002. He is general secretary of ex-servicemen association in Lohegaon. He has been active in the local mohalla committee.

Preetam Indalkar who is a civic activist and works in Alfa Laval, said people are angry with corruption. PNS has become a platform to express the anger. Bhairu Chowgule is an engineer and an assistant manager in Praj Industries. He is working with Akhil Bharatiya Janeev Sanghtna. Raisa Shaikh is a graduate activist and works for slum dwellers.

Meanwhile, Indalkar had put up a flex board declaring his candidature. He got it removed when a newspaper pointed out that the PNS was fighting against wrong practices of established political parties and yet it was following their practice of putting up flex boards for publicity.
