The residents of Asuda Kutir, a housing society at Waterfield Road, Bandra, have alleged that an official appointed by the deputy registrar of Cooperative Housing Societies (CHS) to manage administrative affairs of the society was abetting illegal constructions in the building, thereby misusing his powers and endangering the lives of the residents.

According to the residents, PV Dangre, the administrator, has permitted additions and alterations to a ground floor structure of the six-storeyed building, which has been let out for commercial purposes.

“The permission was granted by the administrator despite objection from many members of the housing society. It was found that the renovation work had tampered with beams and pillars of the building. The work stopped last week, following an inspection by the BMC,” said Mahesh Chandiramani, a resident.

Dangre was appointed in March this year, following a dispute between the members of the society. “Being an ad-hoc appointee, the powers of an administrator are restricted.
However, he has been inducting members and issuing unwarranted permissions,” said Kaushal Sharma, legal advisor of the society members.

The residents have served a legal notice to the deputy registrar, copies of which have been sent to chief minister Ashok Chavan, municipal commissioner Jairaj Phatak and police commissioner D Sivanandan. The administrator’s office has also turned a blind eye to the alleged illegal parking. Complaints regarding the same were made to the local municipal ward office without any result, said the residents.

Dangre was unavailable for comments when contacted.
