The number of women personnel in the Mumbai Police is dismal. A report submitted by the Office of the Commissioner of Police to the Bombay high court, states that high profile police stations like Malabar Hill, Marine Drive, Gamdevi, Shivaji Park, Vile Parle, Khar,
Santa Cruz, etc, do not have a single women police officer.

According to the report, the current strength of the Mumbai Police is 3,298. However, there are 111 women officers and 1,714 women constables.

Out of the 90 police stations, 48 have female officers, while the rest have women constables, the high court was informed on Tuesday.

“This undoubtedly means all police stations in the city do not have women police officers. We are concerned about the situation and it must improve,” said a division bench of justice Ranjana Desai and justice Mridula Bhatkar.

The court was hearing a petition filed by 21-year-old Kavita (name changed) who alleged that she was forced into prostitution by one by one Rajesh Rajput, who she had known for at least a decade. The girl, who hails from a remote village in West Bengal, said that despite her repeated attempts, the Malad police station did not register her complaint.

The court observed that in cases like Kavita’s, only a lady police officer should record the statement of the victim. “Female victims like her [Kavita] should be listened to carefully. Even if a woman is a prostitute, police must hear her grievances and treat her well. She may not have entered the profession willingly, she may have been pushed into it. You [police] should not draw conclusions,” said justice Desai.

The court has now directed additional public prosecutor Poornima Kantharia to seek provisions about the deployment of women police officers in each police station, and has asked the commissioner about steps being taken to appoint more women personnel.
