History-sheeter nabbed while his 2 aides escape

Two constables with the Kurar police were attacked with a chopper by a robber and two of his associates early Sunday morning at Malad (E). One of the constables sustained a head injury and has been admitted to a private hospital in Malad (W).

According to the police, while four police constables Sunil Hosalkar, Ugal Mugle, Babu Kulgutar and R Tatkare were patrolling near Kokanipada area in Kurar village, they received information that a 35-year-old robber, Naresh Raghunath Dhanavade, and his associates identified as Jagdish Patel, 24, and Umesh, 27, are hiding in a room of Banerji Chawl in Kokanipada.

Acting on the tip-off, the police team went to the place to verify their information around 3.45 am. ‘’The moment police knocked the door of room number 3 of Banerji Chawl, the robbers opened the door. They were taken by surprise when Dhanavade attacked Hosalkar and Mugle with chopper, his associates managed to escape,” senior police inspector RS Aher, of Kurar police station told DNA.

Aher added that the police, however, managed to nab Dhanavade and seize the weapon. “Mugle sustained minor injuries and was discharged after receiving treatment while Hosalkar, who sustained a muscle deep head injury, was admitted to the Bhagwati Hospital and was later shifted to Life Line Hospital in Malad (W). He is under treatment and his condition is improving,” he added.

Dhanavade, said the police, has several cases registered against him and is a notorious robber. He was involved in an Rs23 lakh robbery heist in Kandivali in 2005. He also has assault and illegal possession of arms cases registered against him in Dindoshi and Kurar police stations.

“We are taking such instances very seriously where policemen are being assaulted. In this incident, the constables should have done some sort of planning before they confronted the robbers. We will conduct a training programme in this regard,” Commissioner of Police (Mumbai) DN Jadhav told DNA.
