Commuters passing through Pune cantonment areas are miffed about the delay in the drainage infrastructure work. These, coupled with a number of bad arterial roads that have bore the brunt during the past year, have made commuting a problem.

Portions of East Street near Mhamma Devi Chowk, HDFC Bank ATM and near Victory theatre are in a bad shape. Besides, potholes have resurfaced on the Prince of Wales Drive Road and Kahun Road, making it a difficult ride for motorcyclists.

Similarly, the incomplete road work on Shankarsheth Road from Swargate to Golibar Maidan  currently undergoing widening under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban
Renewal Mission plan is adding to  commuters’ woes.

The Justice KB Hidayatullah Road which starts from Chudaman Taleem in Bhavani Peth and runs up to the Dhobi Ghat needs asphalting. A major portion of Taboot Street has been dug up to facilitate the construction of a new drainage line.

Cantonment residents are upset about the state of roads with the monsoon here and have  urged the administration to expedite the works.   MG Road resident Laxmikant Bulbule said the roads are in a bad condition as the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has not carried out any maintenance work.

Another resident Vijay Jadhav blamed the elected representatives for not taking up civic issues affecting the cantonment residents. “ Elected members must ensure that the roads are resurfaced,” he said. Activist Shailaja Shevale from Solapur Bazaar area said the engineering department of the board was paying scant attention to road-related complaints of cantonment residents.

“The engineering department is expected to carry out road works, its maintenance and look into complaints. However, the department is out of touch with the residents
and does not entertain them,” Shevale said.

Executive engineer of the PCB SV Shirodkar, who is incharge of road works, said the drainage infrastructure work is going on in multiple places in the area. All roads will be resurfaced, once the drainage work is completed, he said.
