Adarsh mooted before Kargil, panel told

Adarsh society was proposed much before the Kargil war and so there was no question of it being formed for Kargil heroes or even flats to be constructed only for them, its chief promoter and honorary secretary RC Thakur has told the Adarsh Inquiry Commission.

In an affidavit filed on behalf of the society, Thakur was a sub-divisional officer at the defence estates office and is accused in the scam, has said, “I state and submit that the society was proposed much prior to the Kargil war and hence there was no question of this society being formed for the purpose of Kargil hero’s and/or the flats to be constructed would be only for Kargil hero’s.” He added that even by its letter of intent dated January 18, 2003 no such condition was imposed on the society by the state government.

Thakur said the building was constructed after obtaining all permissions from all relevant authorities and approved by Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority.

On the issue of whether any person who is not eligible to become member of the society was approved and asked to name, Thakur replied that all applications for memberships have been scrutinised and verified by the government or collector and they could ‘correctly’ reply to the issue.

Thakur said that the entire issue of Adarsh has been blown out of proportion without going into the facts of the matter by the electronic and print media. He had attempted to file the affidavit on the basis of papers and proceedings of their case in Bombay high court challenging revocation of water and power supply.
