The diamond sector in Surat observed a bandh on Tuesday in support of Anna Hazare's cause.

The diamond brokers and traders in the city worked for a few hours and then shut shop.

All the shops and polishing units were closed after news of Anna Hazare's arrest came in.

"We have decided to stay away from work to support Anna Hazare's fight for Lokpal. Mini Hira Bazaar in Varachha, Hira Bazaar at Mahidharpura and Choksi Bazaar are closed for the day," said Dinesh Navadia, president of Surat Diamond Association.

Hundreds of IAC (India Against Corruption) members protested at Gandhi Chowk. They also organised a massive rally with Surtis taking part in large numbers.

The members sat on fast beside Gandhiji's idol at Chowk Bazaar. Armed with banners supporting Anna, the members shouted slogans against UPA government.

While the protest was on, Athwa police rushed to the spot and asked IAC members to wind-up their protest.

After a short verbal spat, cops arrested the protesting members. As the number of agitators was large, few of them were taken to Mahidharpuara police station. However, no case has been registered against the protestors.

"We have detained few IAC members as they were breaching the orders issued by police commissioner. No case has been registered against them," said JM Patel, inspector of Athwa police station.

Deepak Patel, convener of IAC in Surat said their fight will continue. "Union government should accept the Lokpal Bill in its complete form rather than changing it according to their suitability. By making amendments, government has tried to surpass democracy and its values. We will continue our fight," Patel said.

The textile sector, however, functioned on Tuesday. "Every member of FOSTTA (Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association) supports Anna Hazare's fight.

The Centre should accept his demand at the earliest," Devkishan Manghani, president of FOSTTA, said.
