1993 shook us up long before 9/11

Even as cityfolks recounts painful memories of the 1993 blasts, they hope Abu Salem's arrest will bring other culprits in the open.

1993 shook us up long before 9/11

My uncle had some work at the place where the blast took place. Unfortunately, he was present at that moment and was seriously injured. The blast was so powerful that pieces of glass entered his ears and impaired his hearing for almost a year. Till date he shudders at the memory.  — Joginder/Malad

My father-in-law was at the BSE that fateful day. Everyone at home was extremely tense as there was no clear news about the blasts. There were no 24 hour news channels and no mobile phones. It was only in the evening that we came to know that he was fine. Till then, everyone was very tense. He also owned a factory in Vikhroli. They shut the factory for 3 days after that blasts. Everyone was badly shaken by the blasts. — Bijan Chakraborty/Vikhroli

I was in the passport office when the blast happened. Everyone back home was worried about my safety. But I was very lucky as I left the place just before the blast. And ten minutes later, I got the news about the blast. I immediately called home and told everyone that I was safe. — Janki Kannan/Virar

I was at home. The whole city was in a state of panic for a long time after the blasts. It's high time the culprits are punished. Though Sanjay Dutt is accused in the case, it makes no difference to me. He is small fish really, not a terrorist by any stretch of imagination. The whole issue is blown out of proportion only because he is a celebrity. — Sumeet Chhabria /Juhu

I was at home. There was panic due to rumours. Thankfully, no one I know was hurt in the blasts. Sanjay Dutt's name can work in favour of his sister Priya. — Satyen Bajaj /Bandra

I was very young at the time of the blasts. It's a shame that the case is still being heard and the accused still not booked. Sanjay Dutt must quit campaigning for his sister if he has any concern for her. Regardless of his role in the blasts, the issue will be played up by the opposition and that could sway public opinion. — Pankaj Badlani/Juhu

My father was supposed to go to the stock exchange on that day. He had an appointment at quarter past 12. But because I forced him to drop me to school that morning he couldn't keep his appointment. And that is the reason he is with us today. — Krishnan /Andheri

My shop is located just miles away from the blast site. I had to close down the shop by the afternoon. It remained closed for almost three days and we suffered heavy loses. — Deepak Maker/Yari Rd

I was a student at that time and  was home that day.  Despite the general panic, things were under control. Salem, the architect of the blasts is now in custody which will bring the other culprits in the open. However, I don't see that affecting Sanjay Dutt's campaign for Priya. The Dutt-Siddiqui clan is very strong in this part of the city and such things are not going to bother them. — Gautam Bajaj /Bandra
