69.39% voter turnout was recorded in the elections to five municipal corporations and two municipal committees in Haryana on December 16.
The ruling BJP on Wednesday swept the mayoral elections in five cities of Haryana, with Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar terming it as an endorsement of the policies and development agenda of the government.
The BJP's mayoral candidates from Hisar, Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak and Yamunanagar registered victories in the elections held on Sunday, state election commission officials said.
Though opposition Congress did not contest these polls, some of its leaders extended support to independents. The INLD-BSP combine, which was contesting some of the mayoral seats on their party symbols, faced a severe beating and was even behind the independents.
The BJP also bagged majority in Karnal, Panipat and Yamunanagar municipal corporations.
It was the first time that mayors of the five municipal corporations were elected directly. Earlier, the councillors used to elect the mayors.

4. Prestige battle for BJP
Ahead of the next year's Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, the civic polls are seen as a prestige issue for the ruling BJP. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had campaigned extensively for party nominees in these polls. In Karnal, Khattar's home constituency, INLD-BSP and the Congress had thrown their weight behind Independent candidate Asha Wadhwa.

5. No Congress symbol to candidates
Opposition INLD-BSP, too, had fielded its candidates in the polls but the Congress chose not to use party symbol to contest the polls. It, however, lend support to some Independents.

6. Several firsts for local polls
In a first, the mayors of the five municipal corporations will be elected directly. Earlier, the councillors used to elect the mayor. In another significant move, the Haryana Election Commission had decided to treat 'none of the above' or NOTA option as a "fictional candidate" in the municipal polls, making it a must for winning candidates to secure more votes than those cast for NOTA.
