Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi was detained yet again on Tuesday evening after meeting ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal's family. Apart from him, Delhi Police has also detained Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia, Dilip Pandey and Sanjay Singh.

Three days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that he has released Rs 5,500 crore for implementation of OROP scheme, the issue has gained momentum again. On Tuesday evening, Grewal from Haryana's Bhiwani district ended his life in the lawns behind the Jawahar Bhavan, which houses the Ministry of External Affairs.

When Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia went Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in Delhi, they were prevented from seeing the Army Veteran's body.

Commenting on the issue, Delhi Police told ANI, "During protest by political parties at RML Hospital today, none has been arrested. When leaders along with crowd started gathering at RML medical services got severely affected and orderliness deteriorated. Despite several requests when they didn't move, leaders and protesting followers were removed to Police stations and detained."

When asked about the family of Grewal, the police said that due police procedure is on and the family members of deceased were are being spoken to. However, commenting on police's measures, Rural Development Minister of Delhi Gopal Rai was of the opinion that the police was being hooligans with them and requested them to not resort to similar treatment towards a "martyr's family."

However, earlier in the day Home Minister Rajnath Singh defended the action of Delhi Police after it detained Gandhi and Sisodia when they tried to meet relatives of Grewal. "Whatever has to be done for risk reduction, the Delhi Police will do," he told reporters while replying queries on the issue.

Union Minister VK Singh triggered a controversy when he said the "mental state" of the ex-serviceman needs to be probed before drawing conclusions about his extreme action. "He has committed suicide. No one knows the reason behind it. OROP is being shown as the reason. What his mental state was we do not know. Let it be probed first. OROP should be kept above politics," Singh told reporters.

  • Family is cooperating with us in the due process, and all leaders who were detained have been released
  • Leaders from across parties were requested to not gather near gate because of hospital services getting hampered due to crowd
  • We were submitted a written complaint saying that crowd be removed from here so as to maintain medical services
  • But when nobody paid heed to our direction to vacate the area, we detained people at different locations
  • We didn't stop anyone from meeting the family, our concern was just that medical services shouldn't get hampered

Rahul Gandhi after being released:

  • Wanted to speak to bereaved family for two mins, when family came out to meet me they were beaten and dragged to police station.
  • When I asked the police at the station why he acted this way he said he had orders from higher up
  • Arrest me if you want, I said to the police. But why detain family of ex serviceman? Whatever happened with them is wrong.
  • This is the most difficult day for them (family members of late ex serviceman) but even today they were made to suffer: Rahul Gandhi
  • Government should at least apologise to the family of the deceased ex-serviceman for making them suffer
  • This is not the way to operate, this is not how you run the country
  • Was it my fault that I wanted to express my condolences? I wanted to meet them, is it wrong?
  • Government of India has to respect it's people and the soldiers

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the entire nation is ashamed at the way the family of the ex-serviceman is being treated by the Delhi Police, and asked the Centre why has the latter been shifted to an undisclosed location. "The Whole country is ashamed at the way a martyr's family is being treated. BJP might be taking all the pain and agony of the family as drama, but this country doesn't think like this, because Prime Minister Modi had promised that he will provide OROP," Surjewala said.

Surjewala sought an answer from the government behind the detention of the family of the ex-serviceman and asserted that the party will continue the fight for providing justice to the family. "The family member of ex-serviceman has been shifted to some confidential place by the Delhi Police. The Delhi Police did this on the instruction of the BJP government. Where is the family right now and what crime they have committed? We will continue our fight for the family," he said.

Left parties accused Centre of killing the ex-serviceman, contending its "betrayal" over the scheme caused the tragedy. The parties also asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come clear whether OROP has been implemented or not as they stressed the ex-serviceman, Ram Kishan Grewal would not have allegedly committed suicide had the scheme was being executed.

"The basic issue is that a soldier has not been killed by anyone across the border, but has been killed by a government which betrayed its promises on OROP causing him to commit suicide which is great tragedy for the country," CPI(M) Politburo member Brinda Karat said.

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh castigated the NDA government for the "inhuman and dictatorial treatment" meted out to the family of an ex-serviceman. "Not only were the family members of the deceased illegally detained but they were also beaten up by the police in brazen display of shameful high-handedness and mental depravity, " Amarinder said in a statement, demanding strict action against the "guilty" officers.

"What could be more "reprehensible" than the fact that the family was not even allowed to see the body of Ram Kishen," he asked.
