Out there are numerous magazine and online articles dispensing exercise advice for shaping and enhancing breasts. ‘Celebrity’ fitness gurus ‘with implants’ talk pages about how their miracle workout plans can help women shape breasts better.

Let me put it in one flat, factual sentence — there is no exercise that can make breasts bigger or shape them. Why? Because exercises can increase or decrease the size of muscles while breasts are made of adipose tissue a.k.a. fat. The size and shape of a person’s breasts is predetermined by their genetics, which predispose a person to a certain kind of fat accumulation around the mammary glands. There is no natural, biological way by which a woman will lose fat on any selective body part and not on the breasts. Composed of adipose tissue, breast size will reduce proportionally to the overall loss of body fat.

Even in the field of fitness, the unhealthy obsession with skinny bodies with big breasts is unfortunately silently promoted by the so-called epitome of bodybuilding and physique pageant — the Olympia. None of the contestants in the bikini division at the highest level compete without implants — making it an unsaid rule of the competition.

Every time a client asks me about exercises to enhance breast size, I quit exercise science for a bit and shift the conversation to self-image analysis – because that is often where the real question lies. And if its need is still justified, cosmetic surgery and not exercise is the answer.
