'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' Review: Watch this for Eva Green solely!

Film: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Director: Tim Burton

Cast: Eva Green, Asa Butterfiled, Samuel L Jackson, Terence Stamp, Ella Purnell, Judi Dench

What's it about:

Jack (Butterfield) grows up thinking that his grandpa Abe (Stamp), a veritable storyteller, whose tales he grew up on, was crazy. They did sound far-fetched, to say the least.
He even visited a therapist regularly to wonder what was wrong with him. And that only got worse, once he travels to meet his grandpa and the latter dies in his arms.
What follows is a trip to Wales to find out about a home for 'peculiar children'. What he finds there, forms the rest of the story.

What's hot:

You've got to admit hearing the names Eva Green, Samuel L Jackson and Judi Dench in the same cast is reason enough to buy a ticket to this one.
Moreover, we're talking about Tim Burton here. So expect a touch of the macabre. Which is good while it lasts.

What not:

There's that feeling deep down that this would've worked better as an animation flick rather than a live action film. The effects look lacklustre, the dialogues a touch too blah and the peculiarities a little too "whatever". Asa's hero's journey from timid boy to someone who knows his purpose in the world seems a little too forced. It doesn't feel too 'for the kids' nor too "for all ages" falling somewhere in between it all

What to do:

You could watch this for Eva Green solely and I wouldn't judge you. It's the unnecessary restraint that kind of stops me short of recommending it for a second viewing.
