World Diabetes Day: Here's how Fawad Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Nick Jonas tackle it

Diabetes is among the fastest growing diseases in India due to unhealthy food habits and sedentary lifestyles of people. According to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 8.7 per cent population in the age group of 20 to 70 suffers from this condition in the country. Meanwhile, in the United States, approximately 30.2 million over 18 years of age are battling this disease. While the number of people fighting this chronic condition continues to soar globally, even celebs are not far behind. Here’s a look at how some of them tackle it…

1. Sonam K Ahuja

The fashionista was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 17. Besides taking medications and insulin injections, Sonam works out regularly. She follows a healthy routine comprising yoga as well as Pilates and also plays squash to keep herself fit. The Veere Di Wedding actress, who has been a vegetarian for years, turned vegan in 2017.

This hottie from across the border, too, has type 1 diabetes since he was 17. The actor discovered that he suffers from this condition by accident. He revealed in an interview that he would often smoke after going for a swim and on one occasion, he was standing against raw concrete pipes at the pool. “That’s when I got scratches and cuts. I jumped back into the swimming pool, but the water hadn’t been treated that day. I developed a terrible infection and lost 10 kilos. That’s when I realised that I was diabetic.” The Khoobsurat actor now wears a wireless pump, which calculates the number of calories in the food he eats and determines the number of units of insulin needed. After pressing a button, the gadget automatically starts pumping insulin into the body. Fawad also turned vegetarian for health reasons.

The soon-to-be-married singer-actor was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just 13. Over the years, besides taking medications and insulin shots, Nick has taken the help of various glucose monitoring gadgets and which also dispense the required amount of insulin to keep his blood sugar levels in check. The 26-year-old believes in healthy snacking and always eats nuts backstage while performing a concert. Apart from following a low-carb high-protein diet, Nick also likes to do hard-core workouts. He’s tried his hand at MMA, kickboxing, Modo yoga and CrossFit.

Who would have thought the super fit and gorgeous Halle Berry is a diabetic? The actress was diagnosed as a type 1 when she was 22 after she became ill and slipped into a week-long coma. She was then diagnosed with type 2 diabetes due to a genetic predisposition. Since then the Catwoman actress made a huge shift towards healthy eating and exercising. The 51-year-old, who currently follows the Keto Diet, swears by it. Also, Berry is in the best shape of her life right now, doing a myriad of workouts, kickboxing, yoga and meditation. She often puts up posts on Instagram sharing her fitness secrets to her fans.

The Oscar-wining actor revealed he has type 2 diabetes few years ago on The Late Show with David Letterman. He recalls, “I went to the doctor, and he said, ‘You know those high blood sugar numbers you’ve been dealing with since you were 36? Well, you’ve graduated! You’ve got type 2 diabetes, young man.” Hanks admitted he was a “total idiot” for eating an unhealthy diet when he was younger, which he blames for his diabetes diagnosis. Also, his dramatic weight fluctuations for his movie roles, also may have contributed the disease. The veteran actor has adopted a healthier lifestyle by eating right, exercising regularly and losing weight.
