Happy Dussehra: From 'Main Hoon Na' to 'Kalank', when Bollywood reminded people of Ram and Raavan

Ram and Raavan has been an old concept in Bollywood movies, with many films underlining the concept or actually using it as a brand name

After the nine days of Navratri, Vijaydashami, also known as Dussehra is here. This year, it falls on October 25, and might be celebrated in certain parts on October 26 too. The festival is celebrated as a reminder of good over evil. People gather in streets and burn the cutout of Demon God Raavan in hopes of lesser evil in the society and world as a whole.

The day is celebrated because it is believed that Lord Ram defeated Raavana on the set day. While beating/killing Raavan, Lord Ram also freed his wife Sita, who was taken captive by Raavan. Dussehra is also believed to be the day when Goddess Durga clashed with Mahishasura’s army and slayed the buffalo demon once and for all.

Bollywood films have often kept the age-old story alive through their films, either directly on indirectly. While a film like Raavan was actually the story about the Demon God, a film like 'Main Hoon Na' was a subtle reminder of Ram and Laxman existing to fight the evil.

Here are the other films...

1. Raavan

As the name suggests, the story of 'Raavan', featuring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, was the story of the demon God Raavan.

2. Ra.One

Ra.One is basically the animated version of 'Raavan'. The plotline remains that the protagonist (G.One, played by Shah Rukh Khan), needs to destroy the antagonist (Ra.One, played by Arjun Rampal) so people could stay safe.

3. Rudraksh

A movie not many would know about, 'Rudraksh' is all about a man, who is a follower of Raavan, goes out in search for a rudraksh left by the Devil God after his death. It is believed that the Rudraksh consists of power that made Raavan who he was.

4. Kalank

Kalank was one of the most recent films which underlined the concept of 'Ramayana'. It took the part where Sita (Alia Bhatt is considered to be playing that) crosses her Laxman-Rekha (indulges in extra-marital affair) and thus, is captured by Raavan (supportedly played by Varun Dhawan). There is, in fact, a scene where Raavan burns in the background (which takes place during Dussehra) when the two meet.

5. Main Hoon Na

Shah Rukh Khan and Zayed Khan are two brothers who are literally named Ram and Laxman, like from the epic Ramayana. If that was not proof enough, the background of good needing to win over evil (SRK winning over Suniel Shetty) was clearly a hint towards the age-old story.
