DNA Edit: Medieval mores

Jamia’s hostel rules should be same for boys and girls

DNA Edit: Medieval mores
Jamia Millia Islamia

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University’s new diktat imposing restrictions on the movement of its female students living in hostels smacks of gender discrimination. A night-out should be preceded by the father of the student sending a text message to the hostel warden, mentioning details such as name, room number and dates of absence. Ironically, no such rules apply to the boys who, the authorities feel are powerful enough “to take care of themselves” in untoward situations.

The problem with our educational institutions is that they are still steeped in medieval mores and ethos, despite operating in the 21st century. The patriarchal mindset of authorities prods them to issue such diktats solely because they find it obligatory to protect women and the honour of their families. Yet, these people and those in the government won’t strive to make the streets free of predators at night. ‘Men will be men’ is the widespread notion in society that turns a blind eye to gender crimes, and instead asks and expects women not to provoke hormonal outrage in louts. So, a girl/woman is supposed to “dress appropriately and not venture out of home/hostel at night” because it will only invite danger.

Such a notion presupposes that the rule of law would turn ineffective once the sun goes down, turning civilisation into a jungle raj. What the proponents of such regressive theories fail to realise is that gender-equality is the key to India’s growth and prosperity. The Prime Minister realises the importance of nurturing the girl child, educating her and allowing her to carve her niche in the world. His Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign was born out of that conviction. JMI as well as other universities should be inspired by that vision.
