Mumbai University plans new schools of law and engineering

As part of its new initiatives and developmental plans, the Mumbai University is planning to start a School of Engineering and a School of Law. The proposals are expected to be placed at the senate meeting of the university, which is scheduled to be held later this month. “Both schools will offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes,” said a university official.

Some university academicians pointed out that while the concept is good, there must be a definite plan in place to ensure that the projects are either not delayed or neglected. “Some proposed sub-centres of the university are yet to take off. So, the university should take care that the same doesn’t happen with the new projects,” said the academician.

The academician added that the varsity has several self-financing engineering institutes affiliated to it and some are in a bad shape which first need to be looked into.

A faculty member pointed out that the proposal should clearly mention the intended location of the  schools. “Also, it’s essential to debate why the university needs to start them in the first place, and how they will function. Another important aspect is recruitment of teachers,” said the faculty member.

Another new initiative being planned is a ‘Maharashtra Adhyan Kendra’. “It could be a study centre of the culture, literature, music, history and sports of Maharashtra among others things,” said a university official.
