Children deserve a curriculum that prepares them for life
Ruchira Ghosh

In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "If we want to reach real peace in this world, we should start educating the children." Indeed, a nation can thrive and evolve only on the strong shoulders of an empowered youth.

Quality education is the empowerment tool they need. Education isn't just the key to knowledge, it is the key to understanding, and it all starts at the beginning. If we give our children the power of primary education in their most formative stages, they will learn the right values, which will help them identify their strengths and weaknesses, and make them responsible global citizens who are confident in their abilities and engaged in the world.

Teachers have the power to inspire an entire generation of students — both inside the classroom and outside. They are the ones who guide learners to learn effectively, discover ideas and achieve goals. We need to ensure that our teachers are equipped with the right training to deliver effective teaching in the classroom to the leaders of our bright future, whether that is through sharing best practices or use of smart classrooms.

Equally, our children deserve a curriculum that prepares them for life. Today's world changes in seconds, not years, and to support our children we need to have a system of learning that recognizes and trains them to adapt and achieve. Change is fascinating, it is formative, and it helps our children to develop an informed curiosity and lasting passion for learning. These are invaluable skills to build future leaders who are respectful of differences and innovative in the face of challenges.

We have the unique position in the world of an 800 million-strong youth population which by 2020 will make us the youngest country in the world. The potential for India, led by these young people, to grow and achieve is enormous if guided on the right track through quality education. We need to celebrate that potential and recognise the right of our children to enjoy and grow into healthy and educated citizens.
