We don't deserve to wear team jersey: Nicolas Anelka

Tactically we have to be better. Every time we try to change the tactics, it's not working. I don't know if we are clever enough but I have to do with what I have in my squad. Also, a lot of injuries so... it's like that. This is football. he said.

Mumbai City FC may have been thrashed 7-0 by FC Goa in an Indian Super League match on Tuesday, but perhaps the biggest blow for the players came from their player-manager Nicolas Anelka. At the post-match conference, Anelka said that his players did not deserve to wear the team jersey.

Describing the defeat as the worst in his life, the former Chelsea player said, "I think all of us don't deserve to wear the Mumbai City shirt today. It's a big shame for us because this kind of defeat is not acceptable — for me first because I want to win every game and I have never lost 7-0 in my life. Nobody is happy and it's going to be tough. Like I said I don't know how we will react and don't know the feeling of the players right now.

"Tactically we have to be better. Every time we try to change the tactics, it's not working. I don't know if we are clever enough but I have to do with what I have in my squad. Also, a lot of injuries so... it's like that. This is football." he said.

Asked if the absence of Haitian Sony Norde was a big loss to the team, Anelka replied in the negative.

"No it's not about Sony. It's everyone, we were not good enough as a team. I have 26 players and not one player. Last time I was asked whether it was because Sunil (Chhetri) was not there — but he was there today and we lost 7-0. So it's about everybody who is not good enough. We should be ashamed to wear this shirt. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror and know we were not good enough today.

"Now, we have to sit and see what went wrong and rectify the mistakes and win the remaining four matches if we are to reach the semifinal. We had chance to go to the top but our boys failed to cash in on the opportunity and made things difficult for us to reach the semifinal," he said.
