Eyewitness accounts of some survivors from Hotel Trident and the discovery of a sophisticated video camera from a room in Hotel Taj have raised questions over whether the carnage unleashed by terrorists on November 26, 2008 was recorded.

It is feared that some people sympathetic to the terrorists’ cause may have prepared live videos of the attack at the hotels.

At least two survivors of the Trident attack who feigned death to save themselves have told a foreign publication that they saw two people focusing high beam torches on the bodies while a third shot the crime scene.

“I could hear four distinct voices discussing the recording process,” said one of the witnesses, a city-based businessman.

“While I lay pretending to be dead, I saw these four men filming the ghastly scene in one of the hotel’s restaurants. They were there for a few minutes and kicked some of bodies before disappearing into the darkness,” he told the European publication.

Fire brigade personnel also found a professional video camera (see pic) lying in one of the Taj rooms with several 32 GB memory tapes lying on the floor. The camera was not loaded, leading to speculation that the tape was taken away.

Eye-witness accounts of survivors at the Trident hotel and the discovery of a video camera at the Taj, both of which came under terrorist fire on 26/11, have raised concerns that the terrorists got the attack filmed.

Inquiries with the Taj hotel revealed that the room was booked in the name of a French national. “The camera was found in ready-to-use condition with all accessories and lens etc fitted,” said a senior police official.

Counter-terror specialists say it is not uncommon for terror organisations to record footage of their strikes and use it to brainwash cadres. “The Hamas and Fatah outfits in Palestine are known to have a network of publicity teams which photograph or videograph Israeli strikes and pass them on to the world media,” the police official said.

“There may have been some sympathisers of the Mumbai attackers who checked into the hotels before the attacks and later managed to get out after recording the videos,” the police official added.

When contacted, city crime branch chief Rakesh Maria said scrutiny of the CCTV footage retrieved from the two hotels has not yet revealed any such activity.
