DNA Exclusive: Nupur Asthana talks about 'Four More Shots Please 3'

'Four More Shots Please' season 2 created an uproar as soon as it hit the internet. The director Nupur Asthana went on to talk about her show and in an interview with DNA, she also spoke about the conversation with Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Nupur would not come back as the director for the third season, but she went on to reveal a few things about the show. More so, Nupur went on to talk about her own work that was reflective of a newer society, where acceptance was the key.

Here are some excerpts from the interview:

1. You got a live reaction from Kareena and her BFFs for Four More Shots Please. Wasn't that exciting?

I know, I was like whoa!

2. You guys even had a conversation with her on Instagram...

Yeah, it just grew into a fun chat. Everybody kept asking me.

3. So, isn't season 3 happening with Kareena?

(laughs) Wait and watch, what can I say?

4. What inspired you to join the show?

I had seen the first season two months before it released and it was just nice to be able to tell the story of four friends who are leading lives on their own terms. That got me excited. I thought I could bring my own voice to the show and make it fun.

5. You picked up Mahhi Way, a story about a woman dealing with weight issues and recently, your project was about LGBTQIA. Was it a conscious decision to pick such topics?

I gravitate towards human stories that shows people in emotional drama. I also get attracted to young drama, and I want to ensure that there is always something challenging for me. Mahhi Way had the woman dealing with her issues and trying to figure out her life. Even Romil and Jugal was about parents accepting their kids and Romil accepting himself as a gay man. Even in Four More Shots Please, the women are accepting themselves. These things resonate with me.

6. Do you feel these projects were ahead of its time, considering women with weight issues are more accepted today and the society is progressing towards being a bit more open to the LGBTQIA community?

The same happened with Hip Hip Hurray. I don't know (laughs). You'll have to analyze that. But I can tell you that I don't think of that theoritically. It just happens.

7. You also worked with Yash Raj Films for a brief period of time (with Mahhi Way, Bewakoofiyaan and Mujhse Fraandship Karoge). Any plans of collaborating with them again in the future?

I'm sure if Adi feels we'll work on something that excites both of us at the same time. It would be wonderful.

8. Now you have worked in films, TV and web show. So how do you think the mediums are different from one another?

The only thing that is constant is telling the story. The timelime and length completely differ in all the mediums. The budget and space is different. In digital, you have to constantly juggle between writing and directing. I shoot location-wise so even more homework needs to go in it, but once you put it out there, they can easily catch up with it. That's the beauty of web, that you can always go back and watch it. I shot for 57 days for Four More Shots, and it took me the same number of days to shoot a feature film. In a film, I can give my actors time to rehearse among other things, which becomes limited when shooting a show. Television is a completely different ball game. They make money after 13 episodes. They all have their own audiences. Right now nobody is going to theatres because of corona but I'm sure people will be back within a year because of the experience. I think all the mediums are here to stay.

9. Your content is usually targetted towards the youth. Do you think you would expand and make content for other age groups too?

I would love to. I hope to make it a cental character very soon.

10. Would you come back for Season 3?

No, I am not doing it, another director is. They start shooting for it within a year or so.

11. Would you like to explore another genre?

Yes, an action adevnture or thriller.

12. What's next for you?

My co-writer and I are working on an adaptation of a book.
