The big day is finally here, the road to Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 begins today when all 10 franchises come together for the IPL auction 2023 in Kochi on December 23, Friday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has booked two floors of the Grand Hyatt hotel where all the management and staff of every franchise are staying.
While a total of 991 players registered themselves for the auction, a shortlisted 405 players will go under the hammer, but there are only 87 slots remaining with all 10 franchises combined, including 30 slots for overseas players.
It's going to be an intense battle and one that we've seen before. Coming into the auction, all the eyes will be on the big names, the likes of Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, Cameron Green, Kane Williamson, Mayank Agarwal, and Ajinkya Rahane among others.
The auctioneer Hugh Edmeades, who unfortunately collapsed midway through the auction ahead of IPL 2022, has returned to India, and he's expecting an epic contest between the ten franchises.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have the most work to do, with Kaviya Maran's team having a splendid Rs 42.25 crore to spend, whereas Punjab Kings (PBKS), owned by Priety Zinta will also eye a rebuild having Rs 32.20 crore in their kitty.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on the other hand have just Rs 7.05 crore in their kitty and have as many as 11 slots remaining.

Former CSK stalwart Robin Uthappa in a recent video shared by JioCinema said that Jimmy Neesham might go unsold in IPL 2023 auction. He was joined by Suresh Raina and they felt that Ishant Sharma, and Kane Williamson might go unsold in first round and will get picked up in the second round.
Two modern legends of the sport, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard won't be playing in IPL 2023, instead, they have taken up coaching roles with their respective franchises. Thus, both Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will be looking for replacements to the West Indies duo.

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stalwart Suresh Raina has suggested that Sam Curran can captain CSK after MS Dhoni. "CSK really want Sam Curran in their set-up. Chennai wickets will definitely suit his bowling. He has got great leadership qualities as well. CSK can look for a captain in him in the future," said Raina.

While Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) have the most money remaining in their purse ahead of the IPL 2023 auction, Kolkata Knight Riders have 11 slots remaining and they have the least money. It will be interesting to see how KKR go about their business, while PBKS and SRH are expected to be the busiest among all.
Having won the T20 World Cup 2022, English players will be in demand, and the BCCI have confirmed the availability of England and Australian players for the entire league phase.
MS Dhoni became the most expensive player in the auction in 2008, and since then there have been many blockbuster bids, with Yuvraj Singh twice becoming the highest paid players, Chris Morris becoming the highest-paid player ever, and then Ishan Kishan becoming one of the highest paid Indian players in IPL 2022.

Ahead of the main drill on Friday, December 23 in Kochi, a mock auction was hosted on Thursday, with former players Suresh Raina, Chris Gayle and others taking part. Cameron Green fetched 20 cr to become the highest-paid player ever, whereas, Sam Curran was close behind in second place.
