Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Goa on Friday evening to participate in the 17th India-Russia Annual Summit, Eighth BRICS Summit and first-ever BRICS-BIMSTEC Outreach Summit that began on Saturday.
India is hosting world leaders for the eighth BRICS Summit and a first-ever BRICS-BIMSTEC Outreach Summit. BIMSTEC is the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. While the five-member BRICS group comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the seven-member BIMSTEC bloc has Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal. The BRICS summit, being attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and leaders of Brazil and South Africa, is likely to deliberate on a range of key issues including confronting threat of terror and boosting trade and investment.
PM Modi held delegation-level talks with Putin after which the two countries signed 16 agreements and made three announcements across the fields of defence, nuclear energy and technology.
Seeking to further isolate Pakistan on terror, India will mount a major diplomatic offensive against it and push for stepped up cooperation, including support for a comprehensive global convention to tackle the menace.
Modi will also hold bilateral meetings with Xi Jinping and Jacob Zuma on the sidelines of the summits.
