Leslie Lewis launches single for India's World Cup campaign

With the ICC World Cup around the corner, everyone wants to stand up and cheer the Indian cricket team. Musician and composer Leslie Lewis is no different. Lewis is using music to cheer the Boys In Blue to the trophy with his soon-to-be-released single 'Go India Go'.

"It's not a cricket or World Cup song," says Lewis. "Go India Go just cheers the regular India to go get it." But the timing of the release leaves no room for doubt that the song will be directed at the cricket team.

The composer has roped in versatile artists like Shaan and Kailash Kher for the song. “Shaan and Kailash have come together for the first time to record a song," said Lewis. "It’s not about their individual voices but about how they sing together. Just like in India there’s unity in diversity, my song brings diverse individuals together and makes them sound like one. But I’ve tried to keep their identities intact."

The song has been written by lyricist Swanand Kirkire, whose claim to fame is his work for films like Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006) and 3 Idiots (2009). “The song has an Indian and a Western chorus and was recorded with real instruments and acoustics. It’s a simple song for the masses that will catch on,” said Lewis. Lewis, however, hasn't planned a music video yet.

Lewis, who recently won three Mirchi awards for his music in the 2009 Tamil film Modhi Vilayadu, has also composed the music for another Tamil film Chikku Bhukku. He has also brought together various artists to form a band to perform at the Indian Rubber Expo in Chennai this month. The Hindi rock band plays live music which, in Lewis’s words, is 'going back to the roots of music'.

Talking about the audience for such live music, he said, “People rarely see musicians jamming together. They now want to experiment, but they also want entertainment. This is where the bling factor comes in and we’re offering that.”

Lewis, who has maintained a low profile professionally for the past few years, is now attempting to reach out to his fans. For this he will release a remixed, animated video of the evergreen hit ‘Chadh Gayo Papi Bichhua’ from Bimal Roy's 1958 film Madhumati. "My caricature is the hero in the video done by my friend TV Narayan. The video will be released on YouTube by mid-February," said Lewis.

Looks like we are going to see a lot from the 'Colonial Cousins' singer in the next few weeks!
