Leonardo DiCaprio rumoured to play Elvis Presley, but will he be a good King of Rock 'n' Roll?

Baz Luhrmann, who previously worked with Leonardo DiCaprio on The Great Gatsby, is rumoured to pair up with the Oscar nominee once more. Reports suggest that negotiations are on for Baz Luhrmann to direct a new Elvis Presley biopic. To add fuel to the fire, if Luhrmann signs on, he wants Leonardo DiCaprio to play Elvis Presley.

In fact, the negotiations are ongoing and Luhrmann seems close to clinching the deal.

Warner Bros will be taking care of musical components in Presley's catalogue for this project and the scripting will be done by Fifty Shades Of Grey screenplay writer Kelly Marcel.

The biopic is said to be an original piece, not using aspects from previous versions. It is still unclear which periods of Presley's life would appear in the film. Warner Bros will be producing the film, while Luhrmann's wife and Oscar winner Catherine Martin will take part in the project as well in the capacity of costume and production designer.

Of course, Leonardo DiCaprio is a fine actor, giving out unforgettable performances in films like Blood Diamond, The Departed, Titanic, The Wolf of Wall Street and of course The Great Gatsby. But would he make a good King of Rock 'n' Roll?

Acting aside, DiCaprio has the uncanny knack of blending into any role he obtains. Although he's mostly his best in gangster and noir films, he's proven he can handle his own in comedies and romantic dramas. Even though the new generation has seen DiCaprio in the darker roles riddled with guns, drugs and corruption, it would be a refreshing change to see him in an avatar he's not yet fully explored. Elvis Presley is one iconic figure that DiCaprio could definitely pull off. He has that unbelievable charisma that would make him the center of attention, much like Presley. Sure, he may not look as much like Elvis as Jonathan Rhys-Myers (who played Presley in the CBS mini-series Elvis), but with make up nowadays anything is possible, and with DiCaprio's previous track record, he can definitely pull it off.

DiCaprio has played a number of real life figures before, including Frank Abagnale in Catch Me If You Can, Howard Hughes in The Aviator, Tobias Wolff in This Boy's Life, and Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street. And while all these characters require a different style in each role, DiCaprio has done justice to them all. He could, if the deal goes through, easily play the 'Jailhouse Rock' singer and probably do a fantastic job.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Leonardo DiCaprio is also eyed for the role of Steve Jobs, in the reboot autobiography. Although, Presley would be a better fit rather than Jobs.

Here's a look at Myers' portrayal of Elvis Presley, the last time a biopic was attempted.
