This former India opener wants Rohit Sharma to take over ODI and T20I captaincy

The former India opener has suggested that perhaps the time has come for Virat Kohli to give up captaincy in the limited-overs cricket.

Ever since India's exit from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, questions are already being raised and suggestions are being given over the future of the team. 

While analysis of what went wrong is going on, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) will review India's World Cup performance in a meeting with skipper Virat Kohli and chief coach Ravi Shastri. The focus is likely to be on selections made for the big event.

A damning report of a rift in the current Indian team has emerged claiming the existence of two factions, led by current skipper Virat Kohli and his deputy Rohit Sharma, within the team.

Meawhile, domestic stalwart and former India opener Wasim Jaffer has suggested that perhaps the time has come for Kohli to give up captaincy in the limited-overs cricket.

Wasim Jaffer tweeted that Rohit Sharma should be handed over the reins of the team in white ball cricket and he would like him to lead the ODI side in the 2023 World Cup.

“Is it time to hand over white ball captaincy to Rohit Sharma? I would like him to lead India in 2023 World Cup” Jaffer posted on Friday.

Dainik Jagran has reported, quoting a Team India player, that the there are two factions within the squad - one close to captain Virat Kohli and another following vice-captain Rohit Sharma.

 

According to the report, many players are also not happy with the unilateral decisions made by captain Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri. One such decision was the selection of Vijay Shankar over Ambati Rayudu for the World Cup squad.

 

The report also claimed that the decisions and approach of Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli is not unopposed as players are afraid of losing their spot in the team. It also suggests that the captain enjoys the support of Vinod Rai, chief of Supreme Court-backed CoA.

The report, quoting a player, said that apart from the players like Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah who are can not be ignored due to their performances, those close to Kohli get preference in team selection. The report added that there are two factions within the team with the other one closer to Rohit.

The report also added that the team is unhappy with head coach Ravi Shastri and bowling coach Bharat Arun. It claimed that many players now want the duo to leave. Shastri was appointed as the coach after Anil Kumble was forced to resign from his role following an alleged rift with Kohli in 2017.
