The Prince is back

One of the lesser known dictums of Karl Marx was, “Leftists of the world unite, whenever you see a threat to Saurav Ganguly.” Or was that Groucho who said that? Whatever. As far as our Comrades are concerned, the Indo-US deal can wait, Chinese investment can take a back seat and the workers’ revolution can be postponed. There are other, bigger things to worry about.

Saurav Ganguly for one. They are delighted that he is back in the Indian cricket team, that too as a saviour, somewhat like the CPM which is keeping the UPA government on the right track.

When the Indian team failed miserably in South Africa, it was the Comrades —

coincidently, all of them from Bengal — who raised a ruckus about it. Now we know the sub-text of what they meant: bring back Ganguly — a leftie, like them — and all will be well.

Well, the CPM can feel thrilled that their wish has been granted, but let us be realistic. Ganguly is back not because Gurudas Dasgupta went on television demanding it, but because the team at this moment needs every experienced trooper it can get.

Let’s face it: the South Africa tour is going badly, and clearly, the team management has no answers. How could they? There is a paucity of solid players with international experience. What is more, the list of injured is increasing and three players are already heading back.

This is the time for all hands on deck. Ganguly brings a wealth of experience, considerable talent and what is more, is in some sort of form. He has shown that he can motivate his colleagues. He is no doubt also hungry to prove himself, to show that he was capable all along but was sidelined for reasons other than his abilities.

The World Cup is just a few months away. India is low down on the world rankings and needs to put together a team which has the right mix of youth and experience. This is the last overseas tour before the tournament, where the players can get a feel of

international competitive conditions. Ganguly — and the others — need to get going so that we have a team in good working order.

For his own sake and for the sake of the team and their countless fans, let us hope that Ganguly clicks. If he does, we don’t mind if the Comrades end up taking the credit.
