Do animals get heart attacks?
Yes, there are many known cases where domestic pets (cats, dogs, birds) have suffered heart attacks. Heart diseases are quite common in the animal kingdom. The reasons can be genetic predisposition, diet and lifestyle, sudden shock or parasitic infections (eg heartworms). A number of wild animals like gorillas, horses, wolves and lions have been known to suffer from heart diseases as well. Reported cases in wild animals have been far and few, most of them being in zoos. A sedentary lifestyle and the stress of being caged might play a significant role in these cases.

Do dogs dream when they are sleeping?
There have been many successful neuro-scientific experiments that prove that dogs indeed dream while they are asleep. Dogs and humans are over 95% similar, genetically as well as physically. We even share a very close resemblance in our neuro-chemical make-up, which means that our reflexes and memory are wired in a similar fashion.

Why does my dog lick the floor often?
Nausea or stomach upset is the most common cause. Checking the faeces can establish or rule out this cause. Licking the floor can also serve as a temporary relief for sore gums or dental problems. Many dogs suffer from cognitive dysfunction syndrome as they grow old. Any significant change in personality or repetitive behaviour can indicate OCD or mild dementia. Any changes in the environment (like a new pet, new baby, lack of activity etc.) can also lead to excessive licking as an outlet for stress. My dogs do it to indicate they are thirsty or hot.

We have heard that pig fat is used for toothpastes. Is this true?
Most toothpastes contain glycerine which gives them a creamy texture and sweet taste. Since glycerine is made from saponification of fats, the source of which can be either animal or plant, it is quite possible that some toothpastes use glycerine made from animal source (lard). Please look at the ingredients mentioned in the packaging, and if the glycerine source is not mentioned, you can ring up the concerned company and find out. There are many vegetarian toothpastes available in the market.

I have heard that chewing gum companies use bones?
No. Chewing gum is made of gum base, sweeteners, flavourings, and softeners.

My dog has skin cancer and has been undergoing treatment for four months. Recently, my vet suggested chemotherapy. Will it be too gruelling for my dog?
Chemotherapy is expensive and as horrible for dogs as it is for humans. If your vet suggests chemotherapy, do your research before making your decision. Sometimes chemo only keeps the animal alive for an extra month or so. The dog’s quality of life should be first priority. Most dogs receiving chemotherapy visit the veterinarian once a week for treatment. Periodically, X-rays are taken where possible to see if the therapy is helping.
