Maharashtra is witnessing fresh spike in COVID-19 cases. At such a time, Maha Vikas Aghadi is contemplating baring common people from boarding local train services again. The government is expected to take a final decision in the upcoming days after reviewing the situation.

Mumbai local train services became fully operational for common people from February 2. This was after a gap of 10 months due to COVID induced nationwide lockdown.

Before the general public was allowed, the trains travel was restricted to the workforce from essential and emergency services and women travellers in stipulated time slot.

Meanwhile, experts have attributed the rise in COVID-19 cases in the financial capital to the resumption of suburban services.

Due to this Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra is exploring two options - either curtail the allotted time slots for the general public or completely restrict them from taking local trains and allow only people maintaining essential services and providing medical care.

However, a state minister said that they will not restrict the general public from commuting on the train, but may reschedule the timings for them in days to come.

Before lockdown was imposed in March last year owing to the coronavirus outbreak, the Central Railway operated 1,774 train services and the Western Railway operated 1,367 train services.
