Filmmaker-editor Rajkumar Hirani, who catapulted as a director in 2003 after the release of his film 'Munna Bhai MBBS' starring Sanjay Dutt, turns 65 on Friday.

A thorough professional, Hirani began his career in the advertising industry and like one can expect now after having seen his films, he did fairly well there too as a copywriter. But like they say, when you are meant to do different things, things happen differently for you.

So, Hirani ended up in the film industry as movies and filmmaking was his actual calling.

Consequently, he went on to make some fabulously iconic and blockbuster films, like 'Munna Bhai MBBS', 'Lage Rahe Munna Bhai', '3 Idiots' 'PK', and 'Sanju' among others.

So, on the occasion of his 65th birthday, we take a look back at these above-mentioned films and how and in what way they were iconic that audiences still recall dialogues and scenes from these much-loved movies.

Take a look.

1. Sanju starring Ranbir Kapoor

The film, which looks at the spectacularly controversial life of actor Sanjay Dutt, received lots of praise for Ranbir Kapoor's excellent acting and Rajkumar Hirani's fabulous direction. Mostly engaging, the film was the perfect mix of drama, honour and the right amount of emotions all blended well together in appropriate doses. And probably that is the reason why 'Sanju' is considered as one of Hirani's best work in recent times.

2. PK starring Aamir Khan-Anushka Sharma

A story from an inquisitive alien's point of view, a storyline that has been explored before, 'PK' aka Aamir Khan arrives on earth only to be immediately robbed of his 'remote control' that would help him go back to his planet. And as the events unfold in the film, various sensitive topics like superstition, religious bigotry are touched upon. And although the film did get into a little trouble before its release, it did fairly well at the box off because of its amazing script, fabulous performances and sensitive direction by Rajkumar Hirani. It's not everyone' piece of cake to do a film of sensitive topics such as these and not someone the wrong way. However, Hirani managed to get past that hiccup with his fantastic direction and fantabulous art of storytelling.

3. 3 Idiots starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi

One of the finest films, 3 Idiots, a coming-of-age comedy-drama film, became popular with the masses for it had an everlasting message that stayed with the audiences forever. A thoroughly engaging storyline backed by fabulous performances from the cast and spectacular direction by Rajkumar Hirani, the film is considered iconic in many ways. Touted to be one of the highest-grossing Indian films, 3 Idiots, won the hearts of the viewers with its relatable storyline, amazing music and for being a tremendously entertaining piece of cinema, whose unforgettable dialogues and direction is remembered even today.

4. Lage Raho Munna Bhai starring Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi

Sequel to the hit Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munna Bhai came with a different storyline and a fresh take on 'Gandhigiri'. A clever decision to not have even a hint of déjà vu downer in his sequel, Rajkumar Hirani's Lage Raho Munna Bhai impressed the audiences for the newness it brought to the screens with a script that had been even heard of before. A goon with his quintessential henchman, Sanjay Dutt, interestingly is seen trying to revive Gandhian thoughts and teachings and attempting to apply it in today's world, after his heart changes for the good on meeting his ladylove Janhavi (Vidya Balan).

5. Munna Bhai MBBS starring Sanjay Dutt, Gracy Singh, Arshad Warsi

A blockbuster hit, Munna Bhai MBBS is a comedy-drama that offers laughter in abundance, has the perfect mix of tears, emotions and humour with the underlying message that love can overcome all sorrows. A landmark film for Rajkumar Hirani, who debuted as a director, it literally resurrected Sanjay Dutt's careers from the ashes.

A fun watch combined with a great script and direction, it's not something audiences get to experience every day. And so, Rajkumar Hirani's first film set the precedence for all his upcoming flicks that were always looked at with great expectations. And it wouldn't be wrong to say that the filmmaker has managed to live up to it.
