Surat: Organs of 2-and-a-half-year-old dead child gives new lease of life to seven others

On December 9, Jash Oza fell from the second floor balcony of his neighbour's house in Surat city. On December 14, doctors declared him brain dead.

A two-and-a-half year-old boy from Gujarat became the youngest cadaver donor, giving a new lease of life to seven children, including two from Russia and Ukraine, after his parents donated his organs. Jash’s heart, liver, lungs, both kidneys and eyes were donated after his parents Sanjeev Oza and Arachana agreed for the noble cause. 

The heart was transplanted to a four-year-old Russian boy and the lungs to another four-year-old boy from Ukraine at MGM hospital in Chennai on Tuesday.. 

The kidneys were transplanted to a 13-year-old girl from Surendranagar and a 17-year-old girl from Surat through Institute of Kidney Disease and Research Centre (IKDRC), Ahmedabad. The liver was transplanted to a two-year-old boy at IKDRC. The corneas were donated to Lok Drasti Chakshu Bank in Surat.

Nilesh Mandlewala, the president of Surat-based NGO Donate Life that works in organ donation reached out to the hospital and convinced Jash’s father Sanjiv Oza, a journalist, to donate the child’s organs so that he could give life to other children.

On December 9, Jash Oza fell from the second floor balcony of his neighbour's house in Shanti Palace of Bhatar area in the city. Doctors found that he had suffered brain haemorrhage and swelling. On December 14, they declared him brain dead.

This is the second organ donation amid the Covid-19 pandemic in Surat city.

Seven people got new life due to the organs donated by Jash. Jash's heart and lungs were brought from Surat (Surat) through the Green Corridor to MGM Hospital in Chennai. A distance of 1,615 km between Chennai and Surat (Surat) was covered in just 160 minutes.
