In conversation with Amrita Sharma, author of the book 'Taken For a Metro Ride', we talk about several issues that mark modern-day problems, mindset and attitudes. Amrita writes regularly on relationships and people interactions and that is what her new book is all about. Her latest book published by Tree Shade Books is now available on Amazon.

Here are some views that Amrita Sharma's shared with us:

Q: Tell us what your book 'Taken For a Metro Ride' is about

A: My book 'Taken for a Metro Ride' is a novel about a seemingly 'ordinary' activity, which is daily rides in the metro, seen through the eyes of my protagonist, who finds 'extraordinary' experiences during the same metro rides. It is through those journeys that she gets to observe people, their lives and learns that there are so many facets of life, which if we are alert and aware, can teach us a lot about life and living.

Q: What prompted you to write a book on a mode of transport?

A: On days when I took the metro to work to beat the traffic, I was amazed at the sea of people I came across every day. They were all strangers, unknown to me, but when I started paying attention to their behaviour and their conversations, I realised how each one had their own personality, their own problems and their own issues. That’s when I thought of fictionalising my experience because I wanted people to become more mindful of their environment and approach people as individuals instead of just nameless, faceless people.

Q:  What made you take up the issue of mental health in the book?

A: I often came across people during my rides who would talk about people in their family, or in the wider circle, and how they were fighting depression, anxiety and stress, which made me sit up and take notice. I wove the issue in my book because I wanted to highlight the fact that people now need to talk about it openly and not push it under the carpet anymore.

Q: What message would you like to give to the readers of your book?

A: I would like my readers to know that life is happening around us all the time and we just need to be open to all the experiences coming our way. I also hope to make them more empathetic towards the issue of mental health and help anyone in need. We need to accept that it’s not just an idea but a reality that is threatening the lives of many out there. And finally, I would like my readers to know that seeking help is a sign of courage and one should never hesitate if ever they feel the need for support of any kind.
