Watch: Donald Trump meets Kim Jong Un at DMZ, becomes first sitting US president to step into North Korea

Donald Trump on Sunday stepped into North Korea, first for a sitting US President and met Kim Jong Un for the third time amid hopes for new talks at ending North Korea's nuclear programmes. 

Trump met Kim on the southern side of the border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarised Zone separating the two Koreas. 

Trump briefly crossed the inter-Korean military border into the North, becoming the first ever US president to set foot in the reclusive country.

Speaking after stepping in North Korea in the demilitarised zone, Donald Trump said, he was proud to step over DMZ border. 

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un while speaking on Trump's visit said, "This is a historic moment." 

"Stepping across that line was a great honour," Trump said, adding that his and Kim's was a "great friendship," CNN reported.

After a handshake with Kim, Trump walked 20 steps into North Korea. He also invited Kim to the White House. It may be noted that no North Korean leader has visited the US so far.

"I'll invite him to the White House right now," Trump said, shortly after becoming the first sitting US President to cross into North Korea.

"It's good to see you again. I didn't expect to meet you at this place," said Kim

The meeting comes a day after Trump surprised everyone by offering to meet Kim at the Inter-Korean border.
