It was quite an experience for Prince William when he popped out to the shops without his wallet and had to ask girlfriend Kate Middleton to pay.

The 28-year-old could not pay the modest 12.6 pounds bill for pizzas, frozen chips, salad, orange juice and two bottles of water at McColl's mini-market in Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales.

The Royal tried to look simple and low profile by wearing geeky steel-framed specs.

In fact, he went on to deny that he was Prince William.

But the prince, whose granny the Queen, famously never carries any cash, had to call on Middleton, to pay and she used a credit card that disclosed her identity.

Checkout girl Sioned Compton, identified the couple and blurted out: "You're Prince William!" reports the Daily Star.

Embarrassed William muttered: "No. No I'm not."

But Sioned said: "I don't know why he didn't just admit who he was."

"It was obviously him as they had a security guy at the entrance keeping an eye on them. And it was funny he had no money," she added.
