Friends, colleagues, patients and community members on Thursday mourned the death of an Indian psychiatrist who was killed at his clinic in Kansas, US and called it a "tragic loss".

Achutha Reddy, who hailed from Telangana, was hacked to death at his clinic in East Wichita on Wednesday. One of his patients, Umar Rashid Dutt, has been arrested in the killing.

According to reports, US police said that the attacker "repeatedly stabbed the doctor after conversation". He allegedly chased the doctor who tried to escape.

The accused was arrested at a country club after a security noticed a suspicious man with blood spilled on his clothes sitting in a car. The suspect is believed to a 21-year-old Indian man.

In a moving tribute to the doctor, patient Cecilia Smith said, "I tried killing myself, and if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have been here today," Smith told KWCH TV.

Another patient Donna Lloyd and her husband who nearly consulted Reddy for 20 years said: "He was the kindest, sweetest most loving, caring doctor you would ever want to talk to."

"The society is heartbroken over the loss of doctor Reddy", the Wichita Eagle daily quoted Denis Knight, president of the Medical Society of Sedgwick County, as saying.

"Doctor Reddy was an amazing, compassionate man that was kind and loving to anyone he met. He had a gift of knowing what each and everyone of us needed and gave it freely," Brenda Trammel, a psychotherapist at his clinic, told the daily.

In a statement released by Reddy's family said they "want to thank each and every one that made his life a joy every day".

Dr Reddy, who opened his Holistic Psychiatric Services in 2003, was also known to be a Yoga expert.

He graduated from a medical school at Osmania University in India in 1986 and did his residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1998.

Reddy's murder is the second Indian to be murdered this year in Kansas. Another Telangana resident Srinivas Kuchibhotla was shot dead in February.
