After 52 years of the Panshet flood, 3,988 affected people will be rewarded the house they have been living on lease for the past many years. All these flood affected would be mentioned as owners instead of lessee holders on their property cards.

The state government has taken the decision after the committee for Panshet Flood Affected (Panshet Poorgrasta Samiti) led by president Mangesh Kharate pursued the matter for years. City MLC Mohan Joshi followed it up with the revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat after which the state government took the decision. The decision would enable flood affected to avail bank loans as well as other benefits.

Major parts of the city were devastated after the Panshet dam developed cracks which led breakage of the dam. Government had provided houses for flood affected in 13 colonies of Erandavane, Dattawadi, Parvati Darshan, Shiv Darshan, Bhavani Peth, Janwadi and Health Camp Pandavnagar.

Joshi and Kharate while addressing a press conference said, “There are 677 flood affected who are yet to pay for the houses. It was because government stopped accepting the money after 1991. All these 677 flood affected have the opportunity to pay stipulated amount so that these houses can be converted into their own names. Kharate informed that these 677 people would have to pay the amount decided as per the ready reckoner rates on January 1, 1976 between July 15 and October 15, 2013.”

The extra construction by the flood affected on open spaces around their houses would be regularised as per government resolution on April 4, 2002. The societies of the flood affected were formed and in case of Panshet there are 117 societies of these 3,988 people were formed at 13 places in Pune. All these societies were on lease for 99 years and now after the government has decided to give ownership to flood affected persons.
