Diya Sharma, a transgender person who was beaten up by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers on May 27, attempted to commit suicide after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

However, she was discharged from the Rajwadi hospital in Ghatkopar on Friday. She is now determined to put up a fight and seek justice for the heinous attack on her and two others at Majiwada junction, Thane. Around 15-20 MNS workers attacked her at around 8.30pm on May 27.

"I had gone there to distribute contraceptive items and other medicines to people from the transgender community while a group of 15-20 men and women led by Avinash Jadhav came marching towards us," said 23-year-old Sharma.

"They just caught us beat us mercilessly. They pushed me in the mud and hit me and my colleagues brutally," she added.

"Luckily some passersby saw the drama and called the police, who rescued us," said Sharma.

The three were taken to the Thane civil hospital for treatment.

Sharma said that her morale dipped when she had started getting calls from loved ones as the video of the episode went viral, compelling her to take the extreme step. "She had an overdose of some unknown pills and phenyl," said Dr Vidya Thakur, medical superintendent of Rajawadi hospital, Ghatkopar.

"Even after so much happened, the cops just detained one attacker and released him in the morning," she said.

Transgender activist, Laxminarayan Tripathi, agreed, "What MNS has done is quite shameful. Have they ever thought about us in their political agenda? Have anyone tried to give us a dignified way of life? Has anyone given us jobs?." "What did Avinash Jadhav want to show through this attack? If we have such political parties and leaders then its dangerous. We will fight to get justice for Sharma," she added.
