Three months after carrying out a feasibility survey on whether speed limit on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) could be increased, the Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) have decided not revise it. The police said that the decision was taken following opposition from Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Sources said that in fact MSRDC had requested the police to get the speed limit reduced to 50 kmph on the link.

"At the moment, we have decided that the speed limit need not be revised at the sea link. The MSRDC had objected stating that the engineering of the link do not allow any increase in speed limit. The say that the curves at certain points of the sea link are very sharp and this could lead to mishaps if vehicles are at high speed," said an MTP officer.

He added that the agency was of the view that the current speed limit of 80 kmph at one of the stretches on the Sea Link should also be reduced to 50 kmph.

The MTP department had been receiving several demands and complaints, especially from citizens living in Bandra and some delegations who sought changes in the speed limits.

The citizens had demanded that while entering the Sea Link from Bandra at the ingress stretch, the speed limit is 50 kmph, which should be revised to 70 kmph. The speed limit at the straight path way at the sea link is 80 kmph, which citizens wants to be upped to anywhere between 100 kmps to 120 kms. The speed limit for the out stretch is 50 kmph, which again citizens wanted to be revised to 60 kmph, the police said.

The existing speed limits were laid down after considering the curve at the ingress stretch and other factors, the source said.
