First heavy spell of rain on Friday washed away all the tall claims made by the civic body.

All the subway roads and low-lying areas were under water for more than two hours. In most of the cases, the insufficient water drainage capacity of nullahs and drains was the main reason while debris thrown in the Kanjurmarg nullah lead to flooding on railway tracks.

As per the official information from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Colaba Market, Anjirwadi - Mazgaon, Hindmata, Sion Road no. 24, Matunga Labour Camp, Postal Colony- Chembur, Nilam Junction- Govandi, Sakinaka Junction - Kurla, Mankhurd- Ghatkopar Link Road, Chitta Camp - Trombey, Surana hospital - Chembur, Huma Mall- Kanjurmarg, Andheri Subway, Milan Subway, Malad Subway, National College - Bandra, Jogeshwari - Andheri Link Road, Shrirang Sable Marg areas got flooded in the morning. A video of Andheri Subway where four-wheelers seemed like drowning in the water went viral on Twitter. BMC's official handle '@mybmc' posted it.

"Mogra nullah is nine metres in width and insufficient to carry water in the heavy rain. It even gets narrower under the subway that's why water gets accumulated here," said Prashant Gaikwad, Assistant commissioner of K Eastward. There was a proposal to lay another drain line but locals were opposed it. Due to water logging in the Andheri subway, all gutters on S V Road in Andheri West also flooded and it affected traffic. Most parts of the city got flooded due to water carrying inefficiency of the drainage system.

Kanjurmarg Nullah also got flooded and Central Railway locals and Chennai Express were halted for more than half an hour. There are two nullahs which flow under the Kanjurmarg railway tracks, one is natural and the other one is manmade. "A builder had put construction debris in the nullah which choked the path of water and caused flooding in the area, including railway track gets flooded," said Santoshkumar Dhonde, assistant Commissioner of S ward. The BMC is taking action against the said builder.

Public Relation officer from BMC said, "There was a neap tide at 8.52 am due to which many areas were water-logged. But the water was drained out with the help of water pumping stations and de-watering pumps."
