The pumping station will provide relief from waterlogging at Juhu, Vile Parle, Santacruz and parts of Khar and Bandra
Gazdhar Bandh, a sixth pumping station under the Brimstowad project has been inaugurated on Thursday after a much delay. The pumping station will provide relief from waterlogging at Juhu, Vile Parle, Santacruz and parts of Khar and Bandra.
The idea behind the pumping station is to release water from the drain or nullah into the sea at the time of high tide. The flood gates on the mouth of nullahs are closed at the time of high tide to prevent seawater from entering into the city. The pumps lift the water and release it from a higher level. As per the Brihanmumbai Storm Water Disposal (Brimstowad) project, the BMC started working on eight pumping stations.
The first two pumping stations started at Irla And Haji Ali in the year 2010. After nine years, the sixth pumping station at Gazdhar Bandh inaugurated at the hands of Shiv Sena Yuva chief Aaditya Thackeray and MLA Ashish Shelar on Thursday.
The pumping station was supposed to start before the monsoon of 2017. The work of construction started in 2014-15 but the earlier contractor couldn't complete the project because of technical inefficiency and the civic body forced to give the project to another contractor. Finally, the pumping station work has been completed with the cost of Rs 131 crore.
