Justice Mohit S Shah was today appointed as the new chief justice of the Bombay high court, Law Ministry sources said here.

Born on September 9, 1953, Shah was the chief justice of the Calcutta high court.

Shah succeeds Bombay high court Acting chief justice JN Patel, who has been elevated as chief justice of the Calcutta high court, the sources said.

Justice FI Rebello of the Bombay high court has been elevated as the chief justice of the Allahabad high court, they said.

A notification on appointment of the three judges was issued today, the sources said.

Born on October 5, 1950, Patel was enrolled as an Advocate in 1974 and practised for 12 years in civil, criminal and constitutional matters in the District and the High Court Bench at Nagpur.

He was appointed as a Judge of the City Civil Court on April 20, 1987 and was confirmed in the Grade in 1993.

Patel was appointed as Designated Judge to try cases under TADA Act 1987 at Mumbai from 1992-1993.

In 1993 he was appointed as Designated Judge of the Special Court constituted to try Bombay Bomb Blast case.

Patel was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on March 03, 1996 and permanent Judge on January 07, 1997.

Justice Rebello was enrolled as an Advocate in 1973 since when he practised in the Judicial Commissioner's Court, Panaji and then at the Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court.

He was President of the Goa High Court Bar Association from 1994 to 1996.

Rebello was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in April 1996 and made permanent Judge from April, 1998.

Justice Shah started his practice in the Gujarat High Court in 1976 and was Standing Counsel for many Boards and Corporations.

He was elevated as Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court in September 1995 and was appointed Puisne Judge of the said High Court in June 1997.

Shah was elevated as Chief Justice of the High Court at Calcutta on December 24, 2009.
