To deal with the issue of hawkers, the civic body has decided to allot 351 galas (small rooms/shops) to them in the 11 municipal markets across city, and for the first the time, the corporation will be inviting tenders for allotting the galas.

Officials from the estate department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that each 100 sqft gala will be given on the basis of licenses to those eligible for it. “We will be inviting the tenders for the galas soon. The eligible bidders will be given licenses to run their business,” assistant commissioner of the department, Chandrasekhar Choure said adding that plans to further this pilot project will be chalked out after they receive responses.

Choure further said that the markets in which 351 are to be allotted — Walkeshwar, Malbar Hill, Naigoan Cross Road, Dadar (E), Naushir Bharucha Marg, Tardeo and others — have been developed under the accommodation reservation policy of the civic body.

After the tenders are invited, eligible bidders will be given licenses for one year, department officials said. After paying for this one-year licence, they will have to renew it year by year.

“To ensure maximum response, we have kept the premium at a minimum.
However, we have made such regulations in such a way that a bidder gets only one gala,” a senior official said, adding that the tenders are likely to be invited in a month’s time.

Moreover, Bandra activist Aftab Siddique said, “There are 14,500 licensed hawkers in the city. How is the BMC going to choose which hawkers to allot the galas to? It is more than likely that they will encroach upon roads and others will take hold of the galas.”
