The arrested accused have been identified as Sachin Khandagle, 31, Mangesh Sawant, 26, Vishal Khandare, 24, and Suraj alias Satku Kaarke, 25.
The Trombay Police has arrested four persons for allegedly attacking Shiv Sena MLA Tukaram Kate. One of the wanted persons is owner of a company that was given a contract for dumping debris in the creek near the Mumbai Metro work project.
The arrested accused have been identified as Sachin Khandagle, 31, Mangesh Sawant, 26, Vishal Khandare, 24, and Suraj alias Satku Kaarke, 25.
According to the police, on October 12, when Kate was attending a function at Maharashtra Nagar in Mankhurd, five to six persons tried to attack him with a chopper, sword and hockey sticks. One of the accused tried to hit Kate with a sword, but the latter’s bodyguard saved him. The security personnel escorting Kate then pulled out his service pistol following which the attackers fled.
“The metro project’s carshed erection work is going on near Maharashtra Nagar. A Delhi-based construction company, that was in charge of the project, had employed eight contractors to dump debris in the creek near the project area. One of the contractor firms belonged to one of the accused, Mahesh Londe, a resident of Chunabhatti,” said deputy commissioner of police, Zone VI, Shahaji Umap.
On October 8, MLA Kate had carried out a morcha with around 600 persons at RCC’s site demanding employment for locals in the project work and their rehabilitation.
“On October 12, Sena workers punctured tyres of four dumpers which were on their way to fill debris. When Londe learnt about this, he planned an attack on Kate. We are yet to nab Londe,” an officer said.
Tukaram Kate is a member of the Shiv Sena party and an MLA from the Anushakti Nagar constituency.
