Traffic bottlenecks and chaos gripped the city ever since after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) pressed the panic button and closed major yet 'dangerous' bridges across the city — Ghatkopar, Juhu-Tara road and Oshiwara-Goregaon bridges — for repairs.

Coming to the rescue of those commuters who are facing delays regularly because of the shout down, Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis assured to start a special app which will give information on closed roads and traffic movement in the city. He also announced that the bridges will be open for small vehicles after a month.

On Wednesday, Fadnavis called a meeting with the top officials from the BMC, Railway, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Mumbai Police and Traffic Police at his residence 'Varsha' to discuss the issue of dangerous and closed bridges in the city. Giving all power to the BMC commissioner regarding repairs of bridges, he ordered to give free BEST bus services in the crowded areas like the market.

In the audit of 344 bridges across the city, 92 bridges were marked safe, while 116 bridges needed minor repairs and 67 needed major repairs. Of them, 29 bridges were found to be in 'dangerous' state. The civic body had either started demolishing them or had closed them down for traffic movement. However, it had not only resulted in the traffic jam in the various parts of the city but also affected pedestrian movement.

"Ghatkopar, Juhu-Tara road and Oshiwara- Goregaon bridges had been inspected by the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) and Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) experts and will be open for the light vehicles after installation of a concrete overlay," said Mumbai BJP unit chief Ashish Shelar after the meeting.

Fadnvis has also ordered to install a board near the bridges to inform citizens about the repair or construction period. Citizens will also get information about closed bridges and traffic information through special apps. He also asked the officials to provide free BEST bus service around the market areas where bridges are closed.
