The Bombay High Court has asked the state government to start taking steps from now on for filling up post of Chairperson and other Members of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women, which will become vacant on February 9, 2019.

A division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice M S Sonak while hearing a public interest litigation filed by Vihar Dhurve said "The State Government shall ensure that the appointments are made well in advance before the term of the appointed ends."

The bench, questioned the government's move to appoint officials at the Commission, on contract basis as against on regular basis. Dhurve, had filed the PIL in 2013, stating that all the seven posts, including that of the chairman and members, have been lying vacant since 2009. In 2014, government appointed Sushiben Shah as the Chairperson, after a gap of several years. After her term got over the Commission has appointed the present Chairman, Vijaya Rahatkar, in February 2016.

The Commission is celebrating its Silver jubilee year, after it was formed in the year 1993, to ensure protection of woman's status in society. The Commission consist of Chairperson, six non-official members, member secretary and Director General of Police, who is an ex-officio member. A staff strength of 39 is sanctioned for the Commission by the government.

Dhruve said there is server shortage of infrastructure and the government has not done anything to meet its needs. The PIL relying on old data collected under Right to Information Act, has claimed that till May 2013, around 49,000 cases pertaining to atrocities on women was pending in several courts across the state.

The court has now posted the case for further hearing on November 28.
